They Beat The Average HYROX Time With No Training

Participating in a Hyrox with no practice whatsoever is ambitious, but then again, it is the race for every body.

Stan Browney and his buddy Arjen decided to take it a step further and attempt to beat the average Hyrox doubles record of 1 hour and 19 minutes without any prep or practice.

As expected, going into any challenge without any preparation, there were obstacles and a few complications...

Race plan

If you don’t already know, a Hyrox race consists of eight 1km runs which are in between each workout station. The stations are:

  • 1km SkiErg
  • 50m sled push
  • 50m sled pull
  • 80m burpee broad jumps
  • 1km row
  • 200m farmer’s carry
  • Sandbag lunges
  • 75/100 wall balls

If stations aren’t completed correctly penalties are issued and can lead to disqualification from the race entirely.

Their plan was to half of the challenges each with one of them doing the first half and the other finish the second half of the obstacle. This strategy did not last.

Watch how they got on:

First kilometre and challenge

The first km went as smoothly as it could’ve done, however getting to the first station being the SkiErg, the plan to divide and conquer evenly crumbled.

Sled push and pull

The second kilometre went smoothly. One slight bump in the road was our pair accidentally interrupting other racers by straying into the fast lane unknowingly.

Arjen once again defied concerns for his bicep and finished with no issue.

Potential penalties, doubts and burpees

The guys realised they were slow in the runs but quite fast at the specific stations, so it would be the obstacles not the track where they would focus energy.

Stan hated burpees but Arjen was happy to lead speeding past much of the competition with Stan only needing to finish the last few jumps.

Rowing, farmer’s carry, and sandbag lunges.

Next up, 1000m of rowing.

Despite a losing grip momentarily the row was finished quicker than expected leading them on to the farmer’s carry.

Onto the carry, the no practicing was really showing with the kettle bells swinging around the place causing more stress and many switches. The case was the same with the lunges, however, unlike farmers carry – the lunges carried higher consequences.

Drop the bag once and a penalty would be issued, drop it twice and disqualification is the result.

The final challenge

Wall balls is the final HYROX station, and it was Stan who would take on most of the challenge, completing 69 reps of the required 100 with Arjen finishing the final 31.

The result

Both were incredibly tense to hear their final time was, and despite two five-minute penalties they beat the average time by a minute, clocking in at 1 hour and 18 mins.

Take home message

Mistakes were made and penalties issued, but with zero prep Stan Browney and Arjen battled their way to beating the average HYROX time by one minute.
