Eddie Hall Reveals What Motivated Him To Win WSM

Motivation can be hard to come by, especially in January. The gyms are full, the days are cold and dark, Christmas chocolates line your cupboards — it's all too easy to put your goals off for another month. Well, we’ve got good news. Now you can stay motivated like The Beast.

Eddie Hall has shared a video with his top tips for staying motivated. In it, he reveals how he maintained commitment to training to become the World’s Strongest Man, and how he continues to motivate himself now. Turns out what you need is some people that inspire you and some organisational skills. That doesn’t sound too hard, does it?

Little Reminders

“Reminders to stay motivated are super important because it’s alright saying things motivate you, but in all truth, motivation can’t just be clicked on, and you can’t just be motivated like that. What I find is, throughout the day, is little reminders motivate me to train harder.”

Eddie’s gym and training area is full of pictures of and words from the people that inspire him. He sees and reads their advice all the time, so as he goes about his day he’s motivated.

We don’t all have a home gym like Eddie’s, but we can display the things that inspire us as a constant reminder to stay on track. Back of your protein cupboard, on the bathroom mirror, or by your foam roller. There'll be no escape from the motivation.

Quotes from the likes of Mike Tyson, Muhammed Ali, and Anthony Joshua line Eddie’s walls, to name just a few of his heroes. You might choose to put Eddie on your wall... he’s definitely on ours.

Preparation

“Motivation is hard, so make it easy for yourself. Prep. If I’ve got a hard training day tomorrow and I know it’s going to be a hard day, I will prep my meals, I'll prep my vitamins, I’ll prep my shakes. I make everything super easy for myself. If I think it’s going to be a really hard day of training, I’ll even prep my body.”

Looks like Eddie is a believer in the old saying ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail.’ For Eddie it’s all about making his life easier, and when your life is as busy as Eddie’s, you’d do the same.

“One of the best things I did when training for the World’s Strongest Man was put a picture of Brian Shaw — a hero of mine when I was in the Strongman world and he still is — I put a picture of him holding his gold trophy in the dashboard of my car. Every time I got into my car and drove to the gym, I would see this picture and it just reminded me to be better. Do something today that’s going to make you better for tomorrow and it worked.”

And the proof is in the pudding. If you’re going to take motivational advice from anyone, surely it has to be from Eddie Hall. He can do anything if he puts his mind to it, and so can you. Swimming, deadlifting, World’s Strongest Man, boxing — his talents may be endless, but it’s his drive to succeed that really makes the difference.
